Ironmace Games, a small game studio, was recently raided by police on March 9th over accusations of code theft from Nexon, a South Korean game development company. The accusations suggest that Ironmace stole code from Nexon to develop their new game, Dark and Darker.
Nexon was previously working on a game called P3, which was similar to Dark and Darker, but was cancelled in 2021. After this, some of the ex-Nexon developers founded Ironmace Games. One of the news sources has reported that one of the ex-Nexon workers was caught leaking company files and even encouraged co-workers to quit and work on a game similar to P3.
On March 25th, Dark and Darker was pulled from Steam due to a cease and desist order from Nexon. Ironmace released a statement on their official Discord server, stating,
“To all our fans, we have recently been served a cease and desist letter and DMCA takedown by Nexon regarding Dark and Darker based on distorted claims. We are currently working with our legal team to remedy this issue in the best manner possible. Due to the sensitive legal nature of this issue, we must be careful with our statements so as to not jeopardize our position. We ask for your understanding as we work to get the game back up as quickly as possible. Please know that we will do all that is possible for our fans. Thanks!”
According to recent updates, it seems that Dark and Darker’s upcoming public playtest period scheduled for April 14 to April 19 may not happen as planned.
