ThugBooty, a new and small YouTuber, is posing an interesting question that could change the way we think about MMORPGs – are they multiplayer games or simply single player games with other players in it? In his argument, ThugBooty references a 2001 article by Lloyd Sommerer, who used the screen name Sie Ming, in which he outlined 17 key points for game developers to consider when creating a world that is truly multiplayer.

ThugBooty’s main argument is that a true multiplayer game must offer players the opportunity to contribute to the community in a way that is both meaningful and valuable. This means that the things players create must be desirable to at least some other players, but not necessary for all players. Additionally, it should be possible for players to achieve the same status as other segments of the player-base, regardless of the amount of risk involved.

Another key point is that players should be able to enjoy the other parts of the game, even if they are not as effective at fighting as other players. For example, a player who enjoys baking bread should be able to develop their abilities in that area, but not to the same extent as a player who focuses on combat. The economy in the game must also work, with mechanisms for items to age, break, be consumed, need repairs, and so forth, to ensure that the game remains balanced.

ThugBooty’s argument is compelling, and it highlights an issue that has been present in MMORPGs for many years. Too often, players feel that they are simply going through the motions, completing quests and fighting enemies without contributing to the larger community. By creating a world where players can make meaningful contributions, developers can help to create a more engaging and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

ThugBooty’s argument challenges us to think about what it truly means to be a multiplayer game. As we continue to explore the possibilities of online gaming, it is important that we consider how we can create worlds that are truly immersive and engaging for all players. By focusing on the key points outlined in Lloyd Sommerer’s 2001 article, game developers can take a step towards creating a more truly multiplayer experience.
