SirPugger, a popular YouTuber in the RuneScape community, recently uploaded a video titled “ChatGPT is about to destroy RuneScape.” In the video, he discusses a major change that is creeping into RuneScape, which he believes could have significant implications for the game’s future.
The video begins with SirPugger receiving a tip from a player who came across a high-level account at Rune dragons. The account in question had responded strangely to the player’s questions, leading them to suspect that it might be a bot. This suspicion was further fueled by similar encounters with other accounts that had responded with unnaturally intelligent conversations.
SirPugger decided to investigate this phenomenon further and got in touch with someone who had answers. This person showed him an account in Lumbridge graveyard that was generated by a large language model called ChatGPT 3.5. SirPugger asked the account what it liked and didn’t like about RuneScape and even pushed it to name its favorite RuneScape player.
The conversation took a strange turn when SirPugger asked the account what it thought of him. The account responded with “sick content, I love you sir pugger,” which implied that it knew who he was, even though it shouldn’t have been able to. Upon further investigation, SirPugger discovered that the botter running the account was using a customized prompt that fed ChatGPT specific responses based on the context of the conversation.
This customization allowed each bot or bot farm to have different responses and personalities, which could be used to run phishing or other malicious scripts while appearing to be legitimate RuneScape players. SirPugger argues that this could be a significant problem for the game’s economy and fair play.
SirPugger’s video raises important questions about the use of AI in gaming and the potential for it to be misused for malicious purposes. While ChatGPT is a fascinating technology with many potential applications, it’s essential to consider its implications carefully and ensure that it’s not being used to harm players or the game itself. As the RuneScape community grapples with this issue, it will be interesting to see how the game’s developers and moderators respond.
